Grant applicants have reported receiving unsolicited communications asking them to complete an online application with their personal details.
The fraudsters then told them the application had been successful and requested identification and a pre-paid credit for a contribution to the fake grant scheme.
Finally, the fraudsters called to request the card details, allegedly so they could add the grant funds – but then took the money that was already on the card instead.
If you receive a call or email which you suspect is not genuine, hang up and report it to the police via Action Fraud.
If you think you have been defrauded, or if you have shared your bank or personal details, contact your bank immediately.
You can minimise the risk of becoming a victim of such fraud:
- Beware unsolicited calls or invitations to apply for a grant
- Remember that you should not need to pay to access a grant – whether using a pre-paid credit card or otherwise
- Never give out your personal or banking details over the phone or online.
