Top tips: disciplinary proceedings relating to safeguarding

Louise Rea, Senior Associate at BWB, has written for RSM’s ‘Academies back to school’ report on how a school can manage a disciplinary proceeding with a safeguarding element.

The allegations we have seen range from a teacher causing emotional harm to a child, through to improper relationships with students, grooming and even sexual abuse.

Louise discusses the different guidance that must be followed ranging from statutory guidance ‘Keeping children safe in education, through to local authority safeguarding procedures; the academy’s own disciplinary procedures; the ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures and any parallel police investigation.

She also sets out some practical ‘Dos and Don’ts’ for academies to follow.
