Bates Wells Compliance headcount grows with ex-Metro Bank hire

New appointment brings added knowledge of banks’ and building societies’ regulatory requirements.

BWB Compliance has appointed Jacob Copeland to the role of Adviser in its growing team of financial regulation experts. In his new position Jacob will look to advise banks and building societies on the sector’s latest regulatory changes by drawing on previous roles at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and one of the sector’s most well-known challenger banks.

Jacob joins the team from his most recent role at Metro Bank, where he held the position of Compliance and Conduct Risk Manager. In this role he was responsible for assessing the impact of specific regulatory changes such as SM&CR and GDPR, and, more broadly, for providing compliance and conduct risk support for new products.

Prior to working for Metro Bank, Jacob worked for the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in both banking supervision and product risk. He has supervised banking institutions through changes with SM&CR, CASS, remuneration, ring-fencing and suspicious activity reporting. He helped to craft the regulator’s supervision strategy for banking as well as their approach to conduct and business model risk for the sector.

He also assisted in the development of the regulator’s framework for interest rate hedging products and structured deposits.

Gillian Roche Saunders, Partner and Head of BWB Compliance, said:

With our service lines in the venture capital and alternative finance markets now well-established in the eyes of the financial services sector, we feel that the time is right to position our offering so that it can more effectively advise on banks’ and building societies’ regulatory requirements.”

“Jacob’s arrival will give clients the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of an adviser who has a clear understanding of changes that banks and building societies are facing. The combination of his in-house and supervisory experience enables him to provide insightful and practical advice for our clients.”

Jacob Copeland, Adviser, BWB Compliance said:

When making the decision to move, I was particularly attracted by BWB’s positive culture and reputation for providing high quality advice. I’m looking forward to leveraging my banking and regulatory background to provide pragmatic solutions to our clients.”

“With a strong client base and ambitious plans for growth, now is a great time to be joining BWB Compliance’s team and I’m eager to play my part in adding to the team’s capabilities.”
