The seminar will cover the following:
- The key steps to take when coming up with new names, slogans and graphics for your campaigning. How do you protect these elements and, just as importantly, how do you make sure you are not stepping on another’s toes?
- The basics of copyright law. What kinds of content can and cannot be copied?
- Many fundraising activities count as ‘advertising’, an area that has become increasingly regulated in recent years. We will give examples of some of the pitfalls, and how to avoid them.

Mathew joined Bates Wells & Braithwaite in 2009 from one of the world's top trade marks consultancy firms, where he was responsible for the IP portfolios of major UK and International clients. He is a trade mark attorney with over 11 years’ experience of assisting clients with registration and protection of their intellectual property rights. His specialities include assisting public and third sector organisations, registration and management of large International trade mark portfolios, and the effective resolution of trade mark disputes without resorting to court action
Erica provides commercial, contracts and governance advice to charities, social enterprises, creative businesses and commercial organisations. She advises on contracts, trading, sponsorship, advertising, a range of areas relating to creative businesses, governance and legal structures, “spinning out” of local and central government and restructuring services, intellectual property (with a particular focus on copyright), information technology and digital delivery by charities and social enterprises.
Mark has wide-ranging dispute resolution experience servicing a number of sectors, coupled with a specialist interest in all forms of media-related disputes. Mark is a solicitor-advocate with full rights of audience in all the civil courts in England and Wales. Mark assists corporate, charities, public bodies and individuals facing challenges under data protection and freedom of information laws. He also helps them to make the most of their rights when seeking information from others. Mark additionally advises clients in respect of trade marks, copyright, design rights and confidential information.
