Delivering Effective Governance – insights from the boards of large charities
Linking characteristics of governance with performance of key governance roles, Delivering Effective Governance identifies the key drivers of effective governance. It highlights the actions that can be taken to achieve the greatest governance improvements. Over 200 of the top 500 charities responded to a detailed questionnaire covering 50 characteristics of governance of large charities distributed by Compass Partnership in association with the Centre of Charity Effectiveness at Cass Business school. Based on the findings, Mike Hudson and Jacinta Ashworth will share details of how these charities are governed – their structures, processes, meetings and behaviour. They will describe how chairs, chief executives and governance managers rate governance performance. You will be able to identify which aspects of governance your organisations should spend time on to achieve the greatest improvements.
The Managing in a Downturn series
The Managing in a Downturn series started in 2008 and has provided a comprehensive analysis of the ongoing impact of the economic downturn on the charity sector.
Following on from Managing in the new normal – a perfect storm published in 2012, CFG has once again teamed up with the Institute of Fundraising (IoF) and PwC to launch the latest 2013 Managing in a Downturn survey report, The survey is the sixth in the trend measuring series, which has tracked changes in actions and expectations since the start of the recession.
Ian Oakley-Smith author of the report will share the latest survey results and thoughts about the implications for charities.

Mike Hudson is the Director of Compass Partnership. He was Administrative Director of Friends of the Earth during its formative years. Following this, Mike worked in the UK and USA for a business strategy consultancy. He has worked as a consultant to not-for-profit organisations for over 25 years leading teams that bring about major change in complex organisations.
His clients include the Chairs and Chief Executives of a wide range of national and international organisations in the health, housing, education and international development fields, and their government and foundation funders. In addition to managing Compass, Mike is currently a Visiting Fellow at Cass Business School in London.
His book, Managing Without Profit (Third Edition, DSC, 2009), has sold 20,000 copies, been translated into three languages and published in an Australian edition. Mike is a member of the Board of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, Chair of its Audit Committee and a member of the Editorial Board of Civil Society Governance magazine.
Jacinta Ashworth graduated with first class honours from the University of Bristol and has 20 years' experience in conducting market and social research. From 1992 to 2001 she was employed by BMRB International, a leading UK market research agency where she managed research for the public and not for profit sectors, covering health and disability, human resources, crime, citizenship, volunteering, racial discrimination, employment, benefits and international aid and development.
Jacinta's published research includes surveys for the Home Office, the British Heart Foundation, Scope and Tearfund among others.
Since 2003 she has been a Research Consultant with Compass Partnership, conducting governance assignments for the NSPCC, the Royal College of Nursing, the MS Society and Citizens Advice, and carrying out research to inform strategic reviews for the Willow Foundation, DrinkAware and Turn2Us. She has also managed extensive welfare policy research for The Royal British Legion, co-authoring a series of published reports on veterans' needs.

• Has over sixteen years’ experience in the not-for-profit sector, working with charities operating at a deficit or in financial difficulty, seeking recovery or restructuring solutions

• Is a member of the Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales Charities and Voluntary Sector Special Interest Group
• Is a member of the audit committee for Lord’s Taverners, a charity

• Has co-written a book, published by the Directory of Social Change in September 2009, entitled “Managing in a Downturn: Staying Solvent and Surviving Well”.
