Intensive and interactive, this highly recommended course is an engaging way to kick-start a new commitment to good governance, encourage board cohesion or revitalise a flagging board. Working in a small group, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals, learning through plain language and real-life examples how good governance works in practice. The format will leave time for discussion and networking and every participant will come away with an individual action pack based on the ideas he or she has generated during the day.
Jointly facilitated by one of Onboard’s governance experts, Tesse Akpeki, and charity law specialist Lindsay Driscoll, the course will deliver a complete introduction to governance, regulatory requirements and best practice.
New trustees, experienced board members and groups seeking better ways of working together will all benefit from this thorough overview of board governance and leadership. Chief executives, senior managers and development officers, too, can strengthen their understanding and improve their performance. No previous governance experience or preparation is required. We will examine:
• Roles and responsibilities
• Minimising risks and liabilities
• Understanding constitutional structures
• Recruiting, training and developing board members
• Reviewing the organisation’s activities
• Good meetings and information management
• Relationships with staff
• Managing conflicts of interest
• Evaluating and reviewing performance
