The Charity Commission highlighted in its updated safeguarding guidance (October 2019) that it expects every trustee to have a clear oversight of how safeguarding and protecting people from harm are managed within their charity. The guidance stipulates that this means monitoring performance in relation to safeguarding management, not just in statistical form but with qualitative reporting, and suggests that this might include commissioning external reviews or inspections and/or site visits, or reviewing a sample of past concerns.

With that in mind, we will be exploring good practice around conducting safeguarding reviews and investigations and, in particular, the use of external reviews. We are pleased to have Alex Howlett and Charlene Brown from Howlett Brown join us for this round table. Howlett Brown is a people intelligence company and is experienced in carrying out independent investigations and culture reviews. They will share with us good practice and pitfalls when conducting investigations (including how to deal with issues where people wish to remain anonymous). We will then open up the discussion to all attendees.

As before, the meetings will be held under Chatham House rules, over a glass of wine/cup of tea (as you prefer). This will be an opportunity to discuss your concerns and experiences with peers. While this will not be a formal training session, Bates Wells and Howlett Brown will also be sharing their collective thoughts on what this means for charities. We hope the discussion and shared experiences will enable your organisation to consider how best it should review its safeguarding practices.
