Mairead O’Reilly, senior associate in our Data Privacy team, has written for Data Guidance on how the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted the lives of citizens everywhere, and arguably no group more so than children.

In her article, Mairead discusses how the shutting down of schools, cultural establishments, and the simultaneous curtailment of recreational opportunities available to young people has propelled many children further into the online world, with school lessons and interactions with friends and family members taking place via online messaging apps and platforms.

The article goes on to discuss how this change has come at a time when the UK is embarking on an ambitious new regulatory framework designed to enhance substantially the protection of children, and others, online. We are thus at the early stages of a new ground-breaking and more protectionist approach to regulating the online services and content offered to children in the UK.
