Experience

I advise on all aspects of taxation affecting charities (VAT, PAYE, corporation tax) using my experience from a 34 year career that has included HMRC, big 4 accountants, industry, and for the last 21 years I have specialised in charities.

As a result I can provide advice in the round covering all aspects of a transaction or an issue.  Work I commonly undertake includes:

  • reviewing the VAT structure of charities
  • advice on VAT & property construction and property leases
  • advice concerning PAYE taxes, PAYE investigations, expenses policies, and employed/self-employed status issues
  • gift aid reviews and gift aid audits
  • corporation tax and charities
  • making use of tax exemptions, use of trading subsidiaries
  • general VAT and income tax issues affecting businesses, charities, and individuals.
  • tax and immigration/emigration for individuals

Highlights

  • I worked on resolving an HMRC gift aid audit for a major visitor attraction charity

HMRC argued on the grounds of a technicality that gift aid rules had not been met and that all gift aid should be repaid but their guidance was found wanting and so they dropped the enquiry.

  • I have helped numerous charities and schools maximise VAT reliefs on construction projects

This included restructuring the provision of training and overnight accommodation to ensure all the VAT on multi million pound construction project could be recovered.

  • I have given VAT advice concerning various funding agreements from government and local government organisations
  • I have written a staff expenses policy for a medical research charity
  • I dealt with HMRC VAT enquiries concerning a telecoms company and a charity working in the telecoms field to ensure that VAT recovery was not compromised
  • I have given tax advice to various UK resident foreign nationals to ensure they were not underpaying and overpaying UK taxes
  • I have given advice to various academies and hospices on VAT and the new refund scheme
  • I advised a nationwide education charity on the tax and VAT effects of its restructure and changes of premises
