Experience

I joined the Employment department at Bates Wells in January 2014. I act for a wide range of national and international charities, educational establishments, regulators and SMEs as well as individuals.

I have considerable experience supporting clients with TUPE transfers, effecting large scale restructures, redundancies and making changes to terms and conditions.

I regularly assist with complex disciplinary and grievance processes and how these are impacted by safeguarding obligations, parallel criminal proceedings, data protection requirements and public interest disclosures.

I am a skilled employment tribunal advocate and have significant experience as a legal trainer.

Recent projects

  • I am currently advising CGD Europe on a high profile case concerning transgender rights and the right to express views on sex and gender identity.

This explores unchartered territory by testing the limits of the protection afforded under the Equality Act 2010 and raises a number of important issues which are the subject of intense public debate.

  • I am currently advising several organisations on safeguarding related issues including DBS and reference checks and responding to sexual harassment complaints.

My clients range from household name international charities to regulators and membership bodies. This is a complex and fast changing area of law which is being shaped by the Charity Commission, major funders including DFiD, the #MeToo campaign and mounting public pressure on organisations to respond more effectively.

  • I advised on the TUPE and employment aspects of the transfer of the four Perry Beeches (PBAT) brokeraged transfers to our client CORE Education Trust
  • I conducted a complete restructure and redundancy consultation process for the Secretariat of a Commonwealth organisation
  • I successfully defended a Multi-Academy Trust against unfair dismissal and TUPE claims
  • I defended a national charity against an appeal to the EAT on religious discrimination
  • I have completed a secondment to a healthcare regulator to assist with a restructure and redundancy consultation
  • I successfully resolved a sexual orientation discrimination claim
  • I secured a strike out of an employee status claim at preliminary hearing
  • I successfully resolved a complex disability discrimination claim brought against a national disability charity
  • I advised FM Conway Limited on the employment law aspects of its acquisition of Berkshire Macadams Limited
  • I advised FM Conway Limited on its acquisition of United Asphalt.
  • I advised FM Conway Limited on its acquisition of a minority interest in Toppesfield Ltd
