This exceptional opportunity working directly with lead partner Laura Soley, two associates, a solicitor and a trainee, will cover a broad range of charity law and governance issues, particularly those involving complex charitable trusts and endowments, Royal Charter bodies and statutory charities. It may also involve advising on charity legacies.

Laura leads the firm’s trusts practice and co-leads the cross departmental legacies, trusts and probate disputes group. A true expert in her field, she undertakes a unique mixture of complex work for some of the largest charities in the UK.

Candidates should have at least 8 years relevant experience of advising trusts and, though not essential, it is also desirable for candidates to have experience in general private client, wills and probate.

We would welcome applications from candidates interested in developing a private client practice at Bates Wells, alongside charitable trusts and legacies work, but this is not essential.

We encourage all our lawyers to pursue their personal interests through their practice, develop management skills through supervising junior fee earners, contribute to business development and work cross-departmentally through our wide range of exceptionally strong sector groups.

Senior associates are provided with career development support, for example encouragement to co-manage client relationships with partners, support the development of recently qualified lawyers and be involved in the development of the department’s strategy.

Though this is principally a trusts role there will be the opportunity to develop other areas of expertise in line with personal interests and client demand. Our practice is extremely diverse, including establishment and charity registration, regulatory issues, fundraising, grants, mergers, incorporations, spin-outs, governance, commercial contracts, trusts, social finance, data privacy, elections and campaigning. Accordingly we offer opportunities to undertake both advisory and transactional work at the very cutting edge of charity and social enterprise law, supported by a comprehensive training programme and specialist PSL team.

Our permeable team structure ensures a supportive environment coupled with the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues across the department.

We offer greater flexibility than most City firms and welcome applications on a full or part time basis.

Required skills and experience

The role requires a self-motivated trusts specialist with the ability to excel at multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 8 years PQE gained in a reputable firm.
