A social enterprise that’s going places

In the largest refinancing deal of its kind, we’ve helped a community transport company to grow into one of the UK’s most successful social enterprises.

What happened?

HCT Group started life as Hackney Community Transport, a charity minibus service in Hackney. But they always had ambitions to do more: to serve more communities, employ more people and even take on bigger commercial contracts. After all, the more profits they could make from those contracts, the more they could reinvest in community transport.

To do it, HCT Group needed to buy more vehicles, buy more depots and improve their infrastructure. Above all, they needed finance.

How did we help?

We started helping HCT scale up its business back in 2008. Most recently, we advised HCT Group and their investors (using two different teams) to secure loans and social loans totalling £10,000,000. The social loans encourage the charity’s good work, with investors lowering interest rates as HCT hits its social impact targets. So, doing good for the community, does good for HCT Group’s balance sheet, too.
