I’m a Senior Associate working across both the Public and Regulatory and Charity teams, focussing on governance, international work (in particular navigating counter-terrorism and sanctions risks for NGOs), election law and general regulation.
I work with individuals and organisations that have the often daunting task of trying to contend with regulatory intervention and working through complex statutory regimes – often in times of crisis, such as where humanitarian intervention is urgently required due to conflict, disaster or changes to international relations.
- Fighting fake news When a charity working in difficult conditions across the Middle East found itself subject to a campaign of disinformation , accusing it of links to terrorism, I worked with the Charity to source evidence to successfully rebut the allegations to the Charity Commission who had opened an investigation after mainstream papers had picked up the story.
- Conflict and emergencies I have advised many organisations on how they can continue to operate in, or get funding into, conflict zones and areas in which proscribed organisations or designated persons operate.
- Defensible decision-making I have acted to resist an application for judicial review of a regulatory body and substantive judicial review proceedings.
- Elections and public affairs I advise various organisations on compliance ahead of major elections, including helping to setup new political parties and ensure NGOs can campaign effectively through election and lobbying transparency laws.
- Governance and company law I regularly advise on governance for public bodies, businesses and charities, including constitutional and policy creation and review.
- Regulatory invention I have supported various organisations with responding to and understanding the risks of regulatory interventions, from bodies such as the Electoral Commission, Charity Commission, OFSI and the Registrar of Consultant Lobbyists.
