Experience

I work with charities and not for profit organisations to structure their tax affairs in an efficient way which meets the needs of the organisation. I help my clients to incorporate tax considerations into their activities in a way which aims to reduce tax costs and manage risk appropriately. By integrating tax considerations into legal advice, we are able to consider the position holistically to find solutions which manage the complete risk environment.

Highlights
  • Gift Aid I worked with a national arts charity to establish a membership scheme which enabled Gift Aid to be claimed on a substantial membership offering. This included the valuation of complex donor benefits. I also led the development of training for staff and volunteers as part of an end to end process designed to ensure compliance and optimal Gift Aid claims.
  • Mergers I worked with a large charity to manage the potential tax costs associated with a merger of two charitable entities. This included tax on substantial property transfers, Gift Aid management and legacies.
  • Board and trustee training I provided training to a range of Boards and Trustees as part of programmes to raise the profile of tax in the organisation. By making complex tax rules accessible I supported the individuals in managing their responsibilities for tax within the organisation.
  • Gift aid for charities I have worked with a number of charities to rectify issues with existing Gift Aid processes. By taking a wide view of the issue, I have been able to support clients to rectify potentially significant issues, disclose the matter to HMRC and work together to reduce the tax exposures.
  • Mutual trading I supported a membership organisation to establish its Articles in a way which enabled it to benefit from the mutual trading exemption from corporation tax. This involved working with management and the wider membership to design an approach which met the organisation’s needs alongside meeting the tax conditions.
