The Government is consulting on proposals to strengthen the Charity Commission’s powers to tackle extremism and other abuse in charities, with a particular focus on its ability to disqualify individuals from acting as trustees and senior managers.

When similar proposals were first trailed earlier this year, a group of charities warned that they might lead to “suppression of lawful advocacy, campaigning and community engagement”. Although prompted by concerns about extremism, the proposed changes to the Charity Commission’s powers could be wide-ranging, especially in today’s climate of increasing complaints and media scrutiny. The proposals raise important questions for charities about the scope of the regulator’s powers and their potential impact on civil society, especially as regards freedom of expression and rehabilitation of ex-offenders.

If your charity is considering a response, or would like to learn more about the proposals, join us for a one-hour webinar on 5 November. Augustus Della-Porta, Partner, and Ted Loveday, Senior Knowledge Lawyer, from our Charity & Social Enterprise team will take you through the proposals, what charities should be aware of, and the wider implications of the proposed changes, as well as the issues charities may want to consider if responding to the consultation.

The consultation closes at 5pm on 23 December 2026.

When and where?

Thursday 5 November at 1pm-2pm via Zoom webinar.
