How long does the Solicitor Apprenticeship last?
The programme lasts a total of six years, at the end of which you will be a qualified solicitor with a Masters degree in Law from the University of Law.
How many Solicitor Apprenticeships are available?
We will offer two apprenticeships in 2024.
How do I apply?
The online application form can be accessed here. Applications will open on 18 December 2023 and close on 29 March 2024, for apprenticeships starting in September 2024.
Can I have an extension to the application deadline?
Applications must be submitted by 29 March 2024. The application portal will open on 18 December 2023, allowing three months for you to submit your application. We will not permit an extension to this deadline as a result of technical issues.
If you need an extension for another reason please contact the Emerging Talent and Recruitment Manager on [email protected], but please be aware extensions are granted at our discretion and not as a matter of course.
My A Level results aren’t the best. Do you take mitigating circumstances into consideration?
Yes, there is space on the application form for you to provide information regarding mitigating circumstances. We read these in detail and take an holistic approach to assessing your application form.
We also use some contextual recruitment software called REALRating, provided by social mobility charity upReach, to put the grades you have achieved into a wider context.
I haven’t met your entry requirements. Can I still apply?
Yes, you are still welcome to submit an application if you have mitigating circumstances. Please make a note of them on your application form so they can be taken into consideration.
Who is eligible to apply for a Solicitor Apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship is exclusively for people who do not have a degree and do not intend to go to university.
I’m not a school leaver. Can I still apply?
Absolutely! We welcome applications from anyone who meets the criteria we have outlined above, and does not hold a degree.
Will you cover travel costs for the assessment day?
Yes, we can reimburse you for the travel costs you incur as a result of attending the assessment day.
I require reasonable adjustments due to dyslexia, dyspraxia or another condition or due to a disability. Can you help?
Yes, and there are a number of adjustments we can provide you with to support you throughout your apprenticeship and during the assessment process. Please get in touch with the Emerging Talent and Recruitment Manager on [email protected] to discuss your needs and the support we can offer.
Will I get feedback on my application if I am not successful?
If you are unsuccessful following either the telephone interview or the assessment day, we will arrange a feedback call with you to talk you through the reasons for the decision and provide you with feedback to improve future applications.
Can I reapply if I am unsuccessful?
If you are unsuccessful at the application form stage, you are welcome to reapply in following years if there has been a substantial change to the content of your application.
If you reach the critical reasoning test, telephone interview or assessment day stage, you may not make another application.
Will you cover the cost of my studies?
Yes, we will pay your course and assessment fees directly to the University of Law.
How often will I study?
One day per week will be allocated to studying with ULaw. You will also receive study leave when assessments are approaching.
What will I earn?
Your salary will increase each year, as follows:
- Year 1: London Living Wage
- Year 2: £30,000
- Years 3 & 4: £35,000
- Year 5: £41,000
- Year 6: £43,000
I’ve accepted an offer of a Solicitor Apprenticeship from you, can I defer my start date?
We will consider requests to do this on a case-by-case basis, but are unlikely to approve such a request unless something unforeseeable has occurred.
Where will I be located?
Our office is in the City of London, and you will be based in our office four days per week. On the fifth day you will study at the University of Law’s Moorgate campus, which is close to our office.
What support will I receive during my apprenticeship?
In addition to the support of the Early Careers Team (Emerging Talent and Recruitment Manager, Apprenticeship Principal and Deputy Apprenticeship Principals) and your supervisors, you will be assigned a ‘buddy’ in each year and a mentor.
You will also receive support from your ULaw tutors and have access to the comprehensive pastoral support offered by the university.
What will happen when I arrive?
You will have a comprehensive induction at Bates Wells before starting your first placement with us, designed by our HR team.. The induction will provide you with the building blocks you’ll need to thrive as a Solicitor Apprentice at Bates Wells.
Will I have to work long hours?
It is unusual for our apprentices to work outside of our core hours (9.30am-5.30pm) and we know that you are also studying. There may be rare occasions when longer hours are required to complete work for clients.
Can I work part-time?
Due to the in depth nature of the Solicitor Apprenticeship programme, we are only offering full time apprenticeships at this stage. This will consist of one day study with ULaw and 4 days working with Bates Wells, at least 3 of which must be in the office.
What’s your dress code?
We operate a ‘dress for your day’ code, which means you should use your professional judgement to determine what is appropriate for your day. If you’re meeting with clients you should dress smartly, whilst if you only have internal meetings you can dress more casually.
