I am a second year Trainee here at Bates Wells. I am currently in my fifth and final seat, in the Charity and Social Enterprise department. I assist fee earners across the department and my current case load includes assisting with the establishment of a number of corporate foundations and other charities; working with a CIC to obtain consent from the CIC Regulator for it to make a donation to a new charitable foundation; assisting a Multi Academy Trust with the acquisition of two new schools; and providing ongoing support to a community group challenging a decision of the Charity Commission in the Charity Tribunal.

  • Dispute Resolution

During my fourth seat I supported fee earners in the Dispute Resolution department with a wide range of work including an appeal to the First Tier Tribunal under the Freedom of Information Act; a Statutory Inquiry launched by the Charity Commission into a small charity; enforcing a default judgment against a company in Greece; and legal research into a wide range of discrete issues covering areas such as copyright, defamation, illegality in contracts, liability for contaminated land and the right to refuse medical treatment.

  • Public & Regulatory

During my third seat, in the Public & Regulatory department, I assisted with a range of work covering areas such as freedom of information, local government audit, professional misconduct, professional regulation and inquests, for clients that included public sector bodies and charities, amongst others.

  • Immigration

My second seat was in Immigration, where I assisted fee earners with a range of corporate and personal immigration matters including applications under Tier 2, Tier 5, Global Talent, Appendix FM, the domestic worker rules, applications outside the immigration rules, and several appeals that raised important Human Rights issues.

  • Charity and Social Enterprise

During my first seat in the Charity and Social Enterprise department, I assisted fee earners across the department with a range of matters including advising on legal structures, charitable status, engagement with the Charity Commission, commercial contracts and governance reviews.
