For over 20 years, I have carried out freelance legal work as a consultant to various law firms, including Bates Wells, on an assignment-by-assignment basis. I have advised on a large range of projects.
Before working as a consultant, I had previously been part of the Construction Law Unit at Clifford Chance, providing advice to colleagues and clients of the real estate department, as well as joining the construction department of DJ Freeman, becoming a partner in 1999.
Here I advised a range of developers, property owners and financial institutions on the negotiation and completion of JCT, ACE and NEC building contracts and appropriate amendments thereto, the appointments of consultants and collateral warranties, bonds and associated construction documentation.
- Due diligence on construction documentation and negotiation of warranties for a major letting for Saipem.
- Reviewing contracts and warranties for a major acquisition of an office building on Cheapside in the City for a large German pension fund.
- Negotiating warranties and development obligations in relation to a major letting on High Holborn London for a large French utility.
- Drafting and negotiating contracts and appointments for a medical insurance organisation for major premises in London and Leeds.
- Drafting and negotiating appointments and the building contract for a major letting by a leading United States retailer in Nottingham.
- Advising a major educational trust on the design and construction documentation for a number of new free schools and conversions to academies.
- Advising an art gallery on the legal consequences of a main contractor insolvency and drafting and negotiating novation and related agreements.
- Work has also included drafting amendments to JCT and NEC and bespoke contracts, professional appointments, parent company guarantees, bonds and warranties.
- I have also recently been involved in the drafting of the latest suite of JCT contracts.
