What are we looking for?
Why us?
We want to see that you’ve done some research into Bates Wells, and that you can tell us why this is the right place for you to train. Maybe you’re interested in our climate and sustainability commitments, large charity client base, or status as the first UK law firm to achieve B Corp status – we want to know what it is that sparked your interest and what research you have subsequently undertaken to support your decision to apply.
Why is the apprenticeship route right for you?
We want to know that you’ve reflected on your decision to pursue an apprenticeship programme, and indeed a career in the law! Why is this the right route to qualification for you, and how will you demonstrate your commitment to the six-year programme?
Work Experience
We are interested in learning about any work experience you have, whether that be legal or non-legal, paid or voluntary. We want to know what skills you’ve acquired as a result of this experience, and how you think they will help you embark on your legal career.
Positions of Responsibility
Perhaps you have been the captain of the football team, or part of a school council or group. Perhaps you have caring responsibilities at home, or have been a workplace team leader – whatever you’ve done to demonstrate that you’re committed and responsible, we want to know about it.
Extra-curricular activities, hobbies and interests
We really want to get to know you. How do you like to spend your spare time? What are your hobbies and why do they interest you? We want to know what makes you tick, and are looking for candidates with a wide range of interests who can demonstrate that they’ve made a commitment to something over a substantial period of time, whether currently or historically. Your interests do not need to be related to the law!
Academics
Our minimum academic requirements are ABB (or equivalent) at A Level and a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 4-9 (A*-C). Please note that we do not require candidates to have completed an A Level in Law.
Please be aware that we use the upReach Real Rating contextual recruitment tool to provide insight into the context in which you achieved your grades, and we also take mitigating circumstances into consideration. So, even if your A Level grades do not meet that threshold, you are still encouraged to make an application.
