Grants

Helping the charity sector to distribute and access grant funding is core to what we do.

We help grant funders and grant recipients to draft, negotiate and interpret grant and sub-grant agreements. It’s a major part of the work we deliver to the sector.

We’ll advise on the important differences between grant agreements and contracts for services, which can protect your charity from an unexpected tax and VAT liability. We’ll also make sure the agreements contain the appropriate conditions and protections including using the funds for charitable purposes, ownership of intellectual property and data considerations.

We advise on complex grant structures such as arrangements with multiple funders, government grants, research grants and grants to non-charities.

If you’re making grants and payments overseas we can advise you on the necessary due diligence and steps which you need to take to comply with HMRC’s guidance.

How we help

Grant-making charities

We’ve advised some of the largest and highest profile grant making charities in the UK, including supporting some of the sector’s key funders in establishing their grant-making procedures and criteria.

Grant recipients

Over the years, we’ve advised innumerable grant recipients, drafting and reviewing their grant conditions. We’re particularly expert in advising on UK public authority and UK public benefit sector grant conditions.
