Strategic litigation

We want to help you tackle the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. We want to help you bring or support claims with other strategic objectives too. Together, we can make a positive impact.

Our litigation team is focused on helping clients on their journey to create a widespread positive impact for people and the planet.

Bates Wells is the UK’s leading charity law firm and the first in the country to certify as a B Corp. We use our values as a compass to guide us in working for impactful clients making a difference to social and environmental issues.

We have excellent credentials for taking on and winning strategic litigation that has a widespread positive impact.

How we can help

We are actively working to address business critical issues through litigation and policy action. Work highlights include:

  • We acted in the landmark High Court ruling in the case of Butler-Sloss v Charity Commission, successfully allowing charity trustees to prioritise climate change mitigation over financial returns in their investments.
  • We wrote the draft legislation for the Better Business Act and actively support the campaign.
  • We are acting for a client who is challenging the EU over the way it permits plant-based food to be labelled.
  • We are exploring the potential to make a claim against a leading social media platform about their use of algorithms to unduly influence elections.
  • We acted for the Uber drivers, getting a better employment deal for an estimated 45,000 Uber drivers with a wider impact on the gig economy as a whole.
  • We are supporting a national charity working on ways to create more positive obligations in terms of access for people with protected characteristics.
  • We are advising a campaigns group on equality issues in proposals taken by the highways authority.

Addressing the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis isn’t something that will happen overnight, but we are actively looking for ways in which we can make a real difference. We want to support our clients to pursue strategic litigation that could have widespread positive impacts on the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis.
