I have been a member of Bates Wells’ Charity and Social Enterprise team since 2012, and was a partner with the firm before moving to a new role.
I am excited to be leading the development of our charity core services, which you can find out more about here. These include our charity reviews and health checks, for instance, looking at your charity’s governance arrangements or its relationship with its trading subsidiary. Through these we provide focused support, conducting an audit and producing a report which provides a route map towards best practice. Our training & development sessions give your trustees and executive teams the opportunity for a guided discussion about the key legal and regulatory issues affecting your organisation, and the tools to tackle those.
I develop these services and support our lawyers in delivering them. I also regularly provide training to clients.
My recent publications include:
- Governance Building Blocks for charities: I’ve written this guide to the key legal and structural elements which charities should ensure are in place for good governance.
- Charity Governance: review: I have developed this review to look at governance across your organisation, mapping out the areas that are going well and those that require more focus.
- Trustee training and development: I keep our training resources up to date with the latest in the legal and regulatory landscape. I also enjoy delivering our training sessions to boards – whether a quick refresher that can be tagged onto a board meeting, or a deep dive allowing time to explore and reflect on duties and governance in practice.
- Trading Subsidiary: health check: if it has been some time since you set up your trading subsidiary or it needs activating or repurposing, then our health check is a great place to start.
- Role of the CEO: health check I have developed this service to provide some peace of mind and clarity over decision-making and roles at board and CEO level.
- I advised a leading disability charity on its governance structure following changes to its stakeholder engagement
- I advised a national health charity on a large restructure of its federation, involving incorporation and new affiliation agreements with local groups
- I have trained numerous fundraising teams on matters ranging from protection of vulnerable people through to corporate fundraising
